From One Question to a Growing Mission

It started with a simple question:

How can technology help us solve everyday sustainability challenges — starting with waste?

Reconnai was founded in late 2021 in Tokyo by a small team with backgrounds in AI, robotics, and environmental policy.
Our early exploration revealed a critical, global blindspot:

Waste data was missing — slow to report, inconsistent, and disconnected from real-world action.

We saw the opportunity to fix this from the ground up. We started prototyping simple tools to capture waste data at the point of disposal — turning piles of waste into clean, structured data. That’s how SmartScale was born.

By 2023, we shifted focus to Southeast Asia, where we partnered with Indonesian waste banks to bring our system into real facilities. This grounded our technology in reality — messy, fast-moving, resource-constrained — exactly where impact is needed most.

Now, we’re building an entire ecosystem of AI tools that help facilities, cities, and producers unlock the value of waste through data.
